An open, OSM-derived vector basemap service (demonstrated with Cambodia and Nepal), built by SOSI (Sustainable OS International) for use in climate risk assessment, geospatial decision support, and related environmental analysis work.

Each country’s basemap is extracted directly from OpenStreetMap data, supplemented with other open datasets, styled independently to reflect the different terrain and cartographic needs of countries, and served as a single self-contained .pmtiles file with client-side vector rendering.

Built using a modern serverless architecture as an industry best practice, each map is optimised across all zoom levels to keep data downloads lightweight. This ensures fast, seamless loading and smooth map navigation.

Unlike third-party map services—even open-access ones—that can change their terms or service conditions over time, SOSI basemaps are hosted directly on your own simple web storage. This eliminates external dependencies and any ongoing fees, giving teams full control over map styling, content (e.g., administrative boundaries), and reliable access.

  • Roads - full hierarchy from motorway to residential, with English/local-script name switching by zoom
  • Water - rivers, lakes, wetlands, and reservoirs
  • Landcover - forest, parkland, and residential areas
  • Places - settlements labeled by population, English at low zoom, local script once zoomed in
  • Administrative boundaries - national and provincial borders and labels
  • Elevation - a shaded background raster derived from Copernicus DEM data
  • Protected areas - national parks and conservation areas
  • Nepal only: mountain peaks
  • Airports, railways, ports, and other transport infrastructure
